What is Filk:
A song specifically written with a science fiction theme, and songs about real happenings in space songs to honor astronauts and missions, or the space program also count.

What is Not Filk: Drug songs are NOT filk songs. The Moody Blues' Floating, the Byrds' Eight Miles High, and Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit are full of space or fantasy references, but these are references for people who need to take drugs to experience spaceflight or flights of fancy. The rest of us read science fiction.

Birthdays: Utah Phillips Birthday Born May 11th - He will be 70

• Calls himself the Golden Voice of the Great Southwest, he is described by others as a true eclectic, archivist, historian, activist, philosopher, hobo, tramp, member of the IWW
• Phillips started wtih the  baritone ukelele and when he left home and traveled to Yellowstone Park to work on a road crew he learned from older workers on the crew, who played guitars and sang old Jimmie Rodgers and Gene Autry songs, He learned to turn ukelele chords into guitar chords by adding a couple of fingers.
• As a soldier during the Korean conflict, Phillips helped to form a band, the Rice Paddy Ramblers. he attended a concert in a Korean theater by black vocalist Marion Anderson adn recalled the anger that he felt when Anderson had come to Utah to perform at his step -father's theater and she had ben refused entry into the town's hotel.
• In 1968, he was nominated and campaigned for the U.S. Senate on the Peace and Freedom ticket. and  received 6,000 votes. Following the election, Phillips remained in Utah for a year, working for the Migrant Council and living on a cot in the back of a big warehouse called "The Cosmic Airplane". Encouraged by friends, including folksinger Rosalie Sorrels, to try his hand at performing, Phillips moved to the East Coast in 1969. Temporarily stopping in New York's Greenwich Village, Phillips settled, for several years, in Sarasota Springs, New York, where he became a regular performer at Cafe Lena.

• In 1936 - heard the five-string banjo in Asheville, North Carolina,
• In 1938 he left harvard before exams and anded a job with the Archives of American Folk Music.
• March 3, 1940, Seeger met Woody Guthrie at a "Grapes of Wrath" migrant-worker benefit concert and folklorist Alan Lomax says this began modern folk music.
• 1940 the duo helped form the Almanac Singers, a loosely organized musical collective that included Lee   Hays, Millard Lampell, Sis Cunningham, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, and others.
• 1942 was drafted and married on his first leave home to Tashi Ohta.
• By 1950 Hays and Seeger, along with Fred Hellerman and Ronnie Gilbert, formed the Weavers - who became blacklisted. In 1955 Seeger was subpoenaed by the House Un-American Activities Committee and became one of the few witnesses called that year who didn't invoke the Fifth Amendment. In a dramatic appearance before the committee, Seeger claimed that to discuss his political views and associates violated his First Amendment rights.
• 1960's Civil War movemnt had Pete using his variation of an old spiritual, which Seeger called "We Shall Overcome," On the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy"  (an attack on Lyndon Johnson's war policies) was cut by network censors
• In 1969 he began working with Clearwater and the Hudson River.
