Fire Danger Watch for Hudson Valley, Catskills

Posted on November 15, 2024 by Tim Bruno

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Fire Weather Watch for portions of the Hudson Valley and Catskill Fire Danger Rating Area (FDRA) from 7 AM to 6 PM EST Saturday. The NWS warns that a combination of gusty winds, low relative humidity, and dry fuels could increase the risk of fire spread.

The affected area includes Schenectady, Albany, Rensselaer, Columbia, Greene, Ulster, Dutchess, and Sullivan counties. Additionally, northeast portions of Schoharie, eastern portions of Montgomery, and southeast portions of Delaware are included in the watch.

Expect Northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph, gusting to 30 mph. Relative humidity is expected to drop as low as 20 to 30 percent, while temperatures will range from 50 to 60 degrees.

Under these conditions, any fire that ignites could spread rapidly. A statewide burn ban is in effect in New York State until November 30.

A Fire Weather Watch indicates that critical fire weather conditions are anticipated. Residents are advised to stay informed about future forecasts and possible Red Flag Warnings.
