Living Jazz, Fridays at Noon…This week ALL NEW MUSIC

Living Jazz, Fridays at Noon.

Just about everything on “Living Jazz” this week has been issued since the beginning of this year. We’ll begin with the new live album from the jazz collective Snarky Puppy, then move on to the Malian singer Oumou Sangare and South African pianist Nduduzo Makhathini, plus a couple of new recordings featuring the drummer Ari Hoenig.

We’ll finish off the first hour with a newly discovered 1972 live recording of the wonderful baritone sax player/composer Pepper Adams at the University of Alberta.

The second hour of the show will begin with the talented young pianist Caili O’Doherty, and move on to the Paris-based singer Melody Gardot and a newly remastered1977 recording of pianist Bill Evans’s trio playing “The Peacocks.” Then, we’ll check out two more Charles Mingus reissues that came out to celebrate the great bass player/composer’s 100th birthday on April 22.

After that, two drummers: Ari Hoenig again, and a new reissue of Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers in 1957 with Thelonious Monk sitting in on piano. That last recording is the first Monk recording to come out in stereo.

It’s a bit of a jumble, but there is some truly inspired music in the mix.
