Monticello, NY – Sullivan County residents can safely dispose of household hazardous waste at a free collection event on Sunday, June 8, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will take place at the Monticello Transfer Station’s Scale House area, located at 91 Landfill Drive.
The collection, announced by Public Works Committee Chair Joe Perrello, aims to provide a safe disposal method for potentially dangerous chemicals found in homes. “This is a great time to clean out your household chemicals,” Perrello stated, “These items can be dangerous to people and the environment if stored a long time or just thrown out with the rest of the trash.”
Residents are welcome to bring common household hazardous items such as herbicides, pesticides, mercury-containing items, cleaning products, pool chemicals, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, fluorescent bulbs, paints, solvents, acids, bases, automotive batteries, antifreeze, and preservatives.
However, the event will not accept tires, refrigerators, electronics, ammunition, radioactive materials, and medical waste.
To participate, residents must show proof of Sullivan County residency with photo ID or other acceptable documentation. Pre-registration is not required.
