On Tuesday, October 29, excavators continued dismantling what remained of the smoldering warehouse at 48 Jefferson Street in Monticello, which caught fire on Sunday around 11:47 a.m., drawing emergency teams from across Sullivan County. Monticello Fire Chief Jose Mora reported that two individuals sustained minor injuries—one was transported to a local hospital, while the other received on-site treatment.
Chief Mora described the fire as particularly challenging, noting that smoke would persist until the building was fully demolished.
Nearly two dozen fire departments either responded directly or stood by for support, including teams from Rock Hill, Liberty, Hurleyville, and other neighboring communities. Assistance also came from the Sullivan County Fire Coordinators, Fire Investigators, Monticello Police Department, Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, and the Monticello Water Department. The county’s drone team was deployed to assist in managing the scene.
The Sullivan County Bureau of Fire continues to investigate the cause of the fire.
