An 11-year-old girl was tragically struck and killed on NYS Route 52 on Sunday, August 4, 2024, while reportedly walking with a companion to pet a dog, according to the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers responded at 8:50 p.m. to a report of a car-pedestrian accident at 7090 State Route 52 in Lava, NY.
The Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Delana Weyandt. She was transported to Grover M. Hermann Hospital in Callicoon, where she was pronounced dead.
The driver remained at the scene, exhibited no signs of impairment, and passed a field sobriety test, according to Chaboty. The New York State Police conducted the on-scene investigation. No arrests or charges have been made at this time, and the incident is still under investigation.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation with assistance from the New York State Police K-9 division.
Sophia Weyandt, a family member, initiated a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe to cover funeral expenses. On the campaign page, she wrote:
“My sister and I were walking and we went to cross the road safely. We looked both ways and held each other’s hand. A driver came speeding, and before I could move her, it was too late. He hit her. She sadly passed away in my arms. I tried so hard to do what I could, learning from school.
“If anyone can help with money for the funeral, it would be much appreciated. She was such a sweet soul and was taken too early.”
Weyandt was a student at Sullivan West Central School District. Daniel Parisi, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources & Instructional Services, said in a statement:
“As we continue to navigate through this challenging time following the loss of our student, Delana Weyandt, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for your unwavering support and unity.
