Living Jazz, Fridays at Noon.
This first hour of this week’s “Living Jazz” show will feature the music of pianist Kevin Hays, who is performing tonight and tomorrow evening at the Tusten Theater in Narrowsburg, N.Y.
Hays has recorded with everyone from the legendary sax player Benny Golson to drummer Billy Hart and fellow pianist Brad Mehldau. We’ll listen to tracks from Hays’ new trio album, which came out last year and features NEA Jazz Master Hart on drums and Ben Street on bass, as well as in duets with wonderful musicians such as Mehldau, guitarist Lionel Loueke, and drummer Bill Stewart.
Hays will perform solo tonight at the Tusten Theater and in a trio with drummer Colin Stranahan and bassist Massimo Biolcati on Saturday. Both performances begin at 7:30 pm.
The second hour of today’s “Living Jazz” show will go back and forth between great jazz singers of the past, such as Ivy Anderson, Billie Holiday and Carmen MacRae, and great young contemporary singers such as Kandace Springs and Veronica Swift.
“Living Jazz” airs Fridays from noon to 2 p.m. on WJFF, 90.5 F.M., and streams online at wjffradio.org.
