Lots of great piano on “Living Jazz” this week: New releases from Fred Hersch (with Esperanza Spalding singing) and Brad Mehldau (playing the Beatles), plus newly discovered and reissued recordings by the late Swedish virtuoso Esbjorn Svensson playing solo, Chick Corea at the 2010 Montreux Jazz Festival, and an extraordinary historical recording by the South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim in duet with the legendary sax player Archie Shepp. We’ll also check out more of drummer Tyshawn Sorey’s wonderful new 3-CD live set, and new releases from trumpeter Randy Brecker, England’s Ezra Collective, and the gifted 23-year-old singer Samara Joy.
There are many great new takes on classic tunes in the mix.
“Living Jazz” airs Fridays from noon to 2 p.m. on WJFF, 90.5 F.M., and streams online at wjffradio.org.
