KINGSTON, NY – The Ulster County Government is seeking public comment on the draft 2024 Ulster County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan, a comprehensive strategy to support and enhance agriculture in the region. The plan, available for review on the Participate Ulster website, aims to address challenges facing local farmers and capitalize on opportunities for a sustainable and resilient agricultural sector.
The 179-page document, developed through extensive collaboration with farmers, landowners, municipalities, agricultural organizations, and the public, analyzes the economic and physical aspects of Ulster County’s agriculture. It includes data, maps, and recommendations focusing on farm types, product sales, markets, production costs, profitability, and the impact of environmental factors, including climate change.
“Protecting and stewarding our agricultural resources is vital to Ulster County’s economic well-being and future food security,” stated Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger, emphasizing the plan’s role in ensuring the long-term viability of farming in the county.
The plan also delves into the importance of infrastructure for agricultural operations, such as processing, distribution, transportation, and farmworker housing.
This draft plan updates the County’s previous Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan, released in 1997. The public can comment on the draft plan through January 31, 2025, on the Participate Ulster website or by emailing Burt Samuelson at bsam@co.ulster.ny.us.
