On October 20, 2024, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to remove a sign that falsely claimed voters needed to provide ID in order to vote. This action followed a complaint filed with the New York State Attorney General’s Office, which swiftly addressed the issue. The Ulster County Board of Elections emphasizes that such disinformation poses a threat to the democratic process and is being taken seriously. The Ulster County Board of Elections reminds all voters that no voter ID is required to cast a ballot at any poll site in New York State.
Voters’ identities are verified through signature verification, in accordance with New York State law. Any messaging, signage, or statements indicating otherwise are both misleading and a form of misinformation.
“It is vital that voters know the facts: in New York, your signature is your verification at the polls,” said Ashley Torres, Commissioner of the Ulster County Board of Elections. “Our primary goal is to ensure every eligible voter can exercise their right to vote without any confusion or barriers.”
Commissioner John Quigley added, “Misinformation about voter ID requirements is not only deceptive but dangerous. We are working diligently to prevent the spread of disinformation and will continue to enforce the law to protect voters.”
