KINGSTON, NY – Ulster County is seeking public comment on the draft 2024 Ulster County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan, a comprehensive strategy for supporting and growing agriculture in the region. The public is invited to share their feedback at a meeting on Thursday, December 5, from 6-8 PM, both online and in person at the SUNY New Paltz Lecture Center.
The meeting will feature remarks from Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger, a presentation by Nan Stolzenburg of Community Planning & Environmental Associates, and an opportunity for public comment. Spanish interpretation will be available. Those interested in attending in person or online can RSVP and register at participate.ulstercountyny.gov/ag-protection-plan.
The draft plan aims to address challenges facing local agriculture and capitalize on opportunities to strengthen the sector’s economic viability, sustainability, and resilience. The 179-page document is the product of extensive collaboration with farmers, landowners, local governments, agricultural organizations, and the broader community. It includes data, analyses, maps, and recommendations informed by a thorough examination of factors impacting Ulster County agriculture.
“Protecting and stewarding our agricultural resources is crucial to Ulster County’s future food security and economic well-being,” stated County Executive Metzger, emphasizing the importance of public input in shaping the final plan. The County’s last such plan was released in 1997 and can be viewed here: https://ulstercountyny.gov/planning/agriculture/farmland.
The draft plan is available for review and download at participate.ulstercountyny.gov/ag-protection-plan, where comments can also be submitted.
Public feedback will be accepted until January 31, 2025. Comments can also be emailed to Burt Samuelson at bsam@co.ulster.ny.us.
