Two people are dead following a tragic motor vehicle accident in the Village of Liberty, NY, on Christmas night. At approximately 8 p.m. on December 25, the Village of Liberty Police Department responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on State Route 52 near Sullivan Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that a 2017 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck had crashed into a 2003 Toyota Corolla. The driver of the Toyota, 17-year-old Hannah Reggio of Middletown, NY, was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Also in the Toyota was 15-year-old Joseph Young of Fallsburg, NY, who was transported to Garnet Catskill Medical Center. He, too, later died from his injuries.
The driver of the Dodge Ram, James Wynkoop, 57, of Grahamsville, NY, was treated for injuries at Garnet Catskill Medical Center but was later released.
The Village of Liberty Police Department, with the assistance of the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, is actively investigating the cause of the crash. Preliminary findings suggest that no criminal charges or tickets will be issued to Wynkoop, the driver of the Dodge Ram.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working closely with the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Team, the Sullivan County Coroner’s Office, and the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office to gather more details about the incident.
