KINGSTON, N.Y. — Ulster County Tourism is inviting residents, business owners, and community stakeholders to help shape the future of local tourism through a series of public input sessions for the county’s Sustainable Tourism Strategic Plan.
The plan aims to guide tourism growth while protecting the natural, cultural, and social assets that make Ulster County unique. Sustainable tourism focuses on low-impact travel, supporting locally owned businesses, and keeping tourism dollars in the community. It emphasizes preserving farmland, historic sites, and mountain trails, promoting year-round visitation, reducing carbon emissions from travel, and ensuring tourism investments benefit both residents and visitors.
Public input sessions will be held at three locations:
- Monday, Oct. 27, 6:30 p.m. – Reformed Church of New Paltz, Fireside Room, 92 Huguenot St., New Paltz
- Tuesday, Oct. 28, 3 p.m. – Marlborough Community Center, Community Room, 1520 Route 9W, Marlboro
- Tuesday, Oct. 28, 6:30 p.m. – Catskill Visitors Center, 5096 Route 28, Mount Tremper
“These public sessions are a vital opportunity for our community to help shape the future of tourism in Ulster County,” said Lisa Berger, Director of Ulster County Tourism. “We want to hear from residents and stakeholders from every corner of the county so that our tourism plan supports local businesses, protects our environment, and reflects the unique character of our communities.”
Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger added, “Sustainable tourism is about protecting the natural assets, cultural heritage, and quality of life that our residents enjoy and that draw millions of visitors a year. These sessions are a chance for the public to help guide a long-term vision that balances growth with stewardship.”
To develop the plan, Ulster County has partnered with Beyond Green Consulting, a globally recognized sustainable tourism consultancy led by Nina Boys, Vice President of Sustainability, which works with destinations worldwide to create strategic plans that deliver positive impact for local nature, culture, and communities.
By aligning tourism growth with environmental stewardship and community well-being, Ulster County aims to offer meaningful experiences while protecting the places people love for generations to come.
