April in the Catskills means fishing season opens, we celebrate Earth Day, and poetry abounds. Join your WJFF program hosts for these commemorations and more.
Rosie Starr, of Farm and Country (Saturdays at 11) highlighted local poets reading local writers in celebration of April’s poetry month during our WJFF Spring Gathering on April 6. On April 13 the show begins with “Ophelia’s Flowers”: Tannis Kowalchuck speaks about the seedlings in her propagation green house on Willow Wisp Organic Farm in Damascus Pennsylvania. And in her segment “Now You Know”, Stephanie Phillips offers sounds of Spring Birds. From a visit to Penn State Ag Day in Honesdale PA, Farm and Country stops by the Wayne County Lyme Disease Task Force booth where Christa O’Dell shares some of her disease prevention knowledge regarding ticks.
On Saturday, April 6 Janus Adams (The Janus Adams Show, Saturdays at 4 p.m.) talked about her inspiration, Dr. Maya Angelou, born April 4, 1928, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., assassinated April 4, 1968 with three guests in three differing situations sharing their unique stories and points-of-view. Max Rodriguez, founder of the Harlem Book Fair and founding-publisher of QBR, The Black Book Review, joins her to talk about books—wonderful African-American books, themes, and authors on April 13. And on April 20: Why, On Earth, would Janus Adams, African American mother and historian produce a kids’ book-and-audio on Mark Twain? Tune in to find out.
Doug Sandberg, of Let’s Talk Vets (Wednesdays at 7 p.m.) focuses on Pennsylvania with guest Jeff Legg, Director Wayne County Veteran’s Affairs Honesdale and the PA VFW Commander Hanzes on April 10
John Gordon, host of Ramble Tamble (Thursdays 7-9 p.m.) will devote the entire show on April 18 to Earth Day with appropriate readings and music and will invite input from listeners.
Angie Page host of Folk Plus (Saturdays at 12 p.m.) will bring local musicians to the air on Saturday, April 13 and celebrate Earth Day (April 22) on April 20 with voices from Liberty Middle School students and songwriters on related issues.
Kathy Geary, host of Now and Then (Saturdays at 3 p.m.) will mark National Poetry Month on Saturday, April 13 with a program dubbed “Literary Rock – Shakespeare to Yeats” featuring the music of Donovan, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell and Sting. And will devote the program on April 20 to Earth Day
On Saturday April 20, Harold Tighe will devote the Culture Club (the monthly local arts edition of Radio Chatskill at 10 a.m.) to a discussion with Dan Rigney on the “Movies and Music” collaboration between WJFF and the Callicoon Theatre, interviews with Bob Carl of the Barryville Area Arts Gratitude Project, Elizabeth Brown, Sullivan County Pageant), Matt Carpenter, DVAA Salon Series, Sally Gladden, Catskill Reader’s Theatre, and a representative from the Phillipsport Community Center about their upcoming concert.
Sonja Hedlund, host of Ballads and Banjos (Saturdays at 7 a.m.) marks Earth Day and spring on April 20; and on April 27 is “on the road” from Chicago and New Orleans.
