Farm and Country (Saturdays at 11 a.m.) program segment, Star Talk’s Keith Hubbard gives us the scoop on the draconic meteor shower coming soon to the northern sky in early evening. In her segment Know You Know, Stephanie Phillips shares a lecture given by John Haas and Lance Verderame at the Mamakating Library on the migration of Autumn Birds in the Bashakill area. On October 12, Farm and Country will be on site at the Barryville Farmer’s Market, and Erin West interviews owner and grower Nimai from Gopal Farm. Rosie Starr visits the Wayne County PA dairy farm of Jack and Ella Chyle and speaks with dairy farmer Chett Havenstrate.
Thane Peterson host of Living Jazz (Fridays at 12 – 2 p.m.) invites guests to share the air. On October 4 his guest will be Thurman Barker, who will be premiering his new CD, Southside Suite, which features the quintet version of the orchestral composition Thurman has been working on for some time. Thurman, who is a key figure in the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, a very important organization in jazz over 50 years old, started playing drums with the founders of the AACM when he was in high school. On Friday October 25 (first day of the Fall fund drive!) Thane’s guest will be David Dann, (“dean” of jazz programmers on WJFF, having produced and hosted jazz and blues shows going back to the station’s beginnings) about his new book, “Guitar King: Michael Bloomfield’s Life in the Blues,” a biography of a seminal figure in this history of blues and rock guitar-playing. And on Friday November 1 Thane brings us the great pianist, Bill Mays, who has played with Frank Sinatra, Phil Woods and Sarah Vaughan, among many others.

As the political season heats up WJFF brings you national and local coverage of important events. Listen to the fourth Democratic presidential debate, live, on Tuesday, October 15 at 8 p.m., the first in the campaign to be offered to NPR stations, when the remaining candidates meet in Ohio. And here, at home, WJFF will broadcast live Sullivan County NAACP’s Candidates Night at the E.B. Crawford Library in Monticello, beginning at 5:45 p.m. (pre-empting the end of All Things Considered) on Wednesday, October 23.
On October 24, Something Old, Something New (fourth Thursday of the month 12- 2 p.m.) will mark United Nations Daywith some choral music that reflects the plight of displaced persons . In addition, host Kit Hulit will share some music that evokes 7th anniversary of Hurricane Sandy’s arrival in New York City.
