The New York State Police today announced the launch of the Autism Awareness – Visor Card Program, a new initiative designed to help law enforcement officers and individuals with autism navigate public interactions more effectively.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects an estimated one in every 45 adults in the United States, with core symptoms that can include difficulties with communication and social interaction, repetitive behaviors, and heightened sensitivity to lights, sounds, or smells. These differences can make encounters with law enforcement challenging, potentially leading to misunderstandings.
“Every year, State Police troopers have over one million public contacts,” said a spokesperson for the Division. “This program is designed to ensure these interactions are as safe and positive as possible for everyone involved.”
The Autism Awareness – Visor Card uses simple visual icons to support communication during encounters, helping to reduce confusion and fear. Each patrol vehicle will be equipped with a card, and members of the public can also download and print the card from the New York State Police website.
The program will be rolled out statewide in the coming weeks, providing officers with a practical tool to enhance understanding and cooperation during interactions with individuals on the autism spectrum.
