With spring approaching and the risk of wildfires increasing, New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is reminding residents about the annual burn ban. Effective March 16 through May 14, the ban prohibits residents from burning brush and yard debris to help prevent wildfires.
The DEC explains that as snow recedes, dry vegetation becomes a fire hazard, especially when combined with low humidity and rising temperatures. While the ban is in effect, small fires, such as those using charcoal or untreated wood for cooking, are still permitted. However, residents are advised to check local regulations, as additional restrictions may be in place.
To help residents stay informed about wildfire risk, the DEC partnered with NYS Mesonet in October 2024 to launch a Fire Danger Map. This tool provides real-time weather data and alerts the public when wildfire risk is elevated.
The DEC emphasizes that even outside the burn ban period, residents should consult the Fire Danger Map and adhere to NYS fire safety regulations, including the prohibition on burning trash.
