September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of early detection and prostate health. To support this effort, Garnet Health Medical Center, in partnership with Garnet Health Doctors, is offering free prostate cancer screenings on Thursday, September 25, and Friday, September 26 at their Outpatient Services Building in Middletown, New York.
Each screening consists of a digital rectal exam (DRE) and a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test, each lasting about a minute. Together, these methods are among the most effective ways to detect prostate cancer early.
“We encourage all men who are eligible to get this free and simple test,” said Samuel Abourbih, MD, urologist with Garnet Health Doctors and chair of the Garnet Health Urology Department. “Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among men. However, cases detected early are often low risk and can be treated quickly.”
The screenings are open to men who meet the following criteria:
-
Ages 45 to 75
-
No personal history of prostate cancer
-
Not under the care of a urologist within the past five years
Pre-registration is required at garnethealth.org/prostatescreening or by calling (845) 333-1133. Appointments are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
