A tragic motor vehicle accident on Saturday claimed the life of a retired police officer and left his wife hospitalized, following a wrong-way collision on State Route 17 Eastbound in the town of Mamakating.
According to the New York State Police, the fatal crash occurred on March 22, 2025, at approximately 5:19 p.m. near Exit 113. A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2019 Mercedes Sprinter Van, operated by Robert Cromer, 62, of Liberty, was traveling westbound on Route 17 when it veered off the south shoulder. The van crossed the center median and entered the eastbound lane, traveling the wrong way. It then struck a 2021 Hyundai head-on.
The Hyundai was being driven by Jose A. Santiago Jr., 65, of Washingtonville. Santiago, a retired NYPD officer and an off-duty member of the Village of Washingtonville Police Department, was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, Blanca I. Santiago, 64, who was a passenger in the Hyundai, sustained injuries and was transported by ambulance to Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown. As of Sunday, she remained in stable condition, authorities said.
Cromer sustained minor injuries, was evaluated at the scene, and released.
The crash is still under investigation, and State Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the Wurtsboro Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 845-888-2681.
The Village of Washingtonville Police Department is mourning the loss of Officer Santiago, who served his community with distinction. Police Chief Brian Zaccaro issued a statement extending condolences to Santiago’s family and colleagues.
“Officer Santiago was a dedicated and respected member of our department, serving with honor, integrity, and unwavering commitment to his community,” Zaccaro said. “His loss is immeasurable, and he will be deeply missed by his fellow officers, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Zaccaro added that details regarding funeral services and ways to honor Officer Santiago’s memory would be announced once arrangements are finalized.
