A road rage incident in the town of Fremont, NY, led to a shooting and collision between two vehicles Jan. 12, according to New York State Police.
State police said the incident occurred about 2:39 p.m. on Warner Road.
The incident began earlier when John Paterno, 51, of Callicoon, was involved in a verbal and physical altercation with a 23-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man. The altercation took place near Paterno’s residence. Following the dispute, the man and woman left the scene. Paterno then followed them in his 2018 Ford Fusion and fired multiple rounds from a handgun at their 2008 Honda CRV. The shots caused a collision between the two vehicles.
Paterno was apprehended at his residence without incident. Police retrieved the firearm used in the incident at Paterno’s home. He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree (a felony), criminal mischief in the third degree (a felony), and reckless endangerment in the first degree (a felony).
Paterno was arraigned in Town of Liberty Court and jailed in Sullivan County on a $50,000 cash bail, $100,000 bond, or $250,000 partially secured bond.
