Port Jervis, NY – The Port Jervis Warming Center is seeking volunteers for its upcoming winter season. The center, which provides overnight shelter, meals, showers, clothing, and laundry services to those experiencing homelessness, typically serves 10-20 adults each night.
Volunteers are needed for a variety of roles, including overnight hospitality hosts, evening meal servers, greeters, and clothing/laundry helpers.
Those interested in volunteering can attend an information session on Saturday, November 2 at 10 a.m. or Sunday, November 10 at 2 p.m. at St. Peter’s Church, located at 31 West Main St., Port Jervis, NY 12771. Prospective volunteers can also contact the center at pjwarming@aol.com.
Last year you allowed the homeless to be drunk and out of control.you allowed drug use, fighting and home and vehicles to be burglarized.your volunteers did nothing to stop this will there be training?multiple police calls everynight. Will the residents have to live in fear.
Your description of problems is not borne out by statistics from the Port Jervis Police. However, we will be looking for ways in which we can improve security outside the building. Most of our guests act responsibly and we do attempt to address situations in which someone is not behaving appropriately.
I’m very interested in volunteering and helping out where I can.
Thank you. I hope you can come to one of our Infosessions — either Saturday, 11/2 at 10.am. or Sunday 11/10 at 2 p.m. Both are held at the Warming Station, located on the lower level of St. Peter’s Church, 31 West Main St., in Port Jervis. Entrance is on Hudson St — look for the red doors. Thanks!
