The Wayne Conservation District accepts orders for its annual Seedling Sale through April 1. The sale features seedlings and transplants of a variety of native trees, shrubs, and ornamentals, many of which are favored by wildlife.
This year’s offerings include locally grown Black Eyed Susan. These potted plants attract wild birds and are a favorite of wild turkeys. The exceptionally bright golden flowers are great for use along fences, driveways, walks, and property boundaries. The three-inch pots of these and purple coneflower are $4 each.
You can purchase bunches of three seedlings of Sugar Maple, White Oak, Norway Spruce, Northern Spicebush, and Eastern Redbud for $7 or $8 each. The Bluecrop and Blueray Blueberries and the Honeycrisp and Pink Lade Apple Trees come in sets of two seedlings and sell for $22 and $35, respectively.
As part of the sale, the Wayne Conservation District sells five-foot-tall tree shelters that help protect the young seedlings from deer and rabbit damage, including an oak stake produced in Pennsylvania. Lastly, three-square-foot mats are offered to protect them from weed competition and moisture loss.
Finally, bluebird nesting boxes, made right here in Wayne County, are available at $18 each.
Orders must be received by April and must be picked up Friday, April 26, from 12 noon to 6 pm or Saturday, April 27, from 9 to 11 am.
