Honesdale, PA – Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale will voluntarily relinquish its Level IV Trauma Center accreditation at the end of this month, the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation announced.
The designation, which the hospital earned in 2017, will be officially withdrawn on March 31, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.
Hospital administrators say the decision was made voluntarily and that emergency care at the facility will continue uninterrupted, according to reporting by Tri-County Independent.
The Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation, the state body responsible for accrediting and overseeing trauma centers across Pennsylvania, confirmed the withdrawal. An updated list of accredited trauma centers statewide will be posted on the foundation’s website, PTSF.org, on April 1.
When the withdrawal takes place, Wayne County will have no designated trauma center within its borders. The nearest trauma center will be Geisinger Community Medical Center — Level II Adult Trauma Center in Scranton, 31 miles away. Under Pennsylvania’s trauma system, Level IV centers — the lowest tier of designation — are typically smaller, community hospitals that provide initial evaluation and stabilization of trauma patients before transferring them to higher-level facilities when needed.
Radio Catskill reached out to Wayne Memorial for comment and Carol Kneier, Community Relations Manager, said they did not have any additional information to share.

An update was made on March 5, 2026 to include Wayne Memorial’s response for comment.
