An active rabies case was just found in the Town of Delaware where two individuals were scratched by a rabies-positive feral kitten. Rabies is a fatal disease. The Sullivan County Health Department urges all residents to stay away from stray cats, as well as all wild animals; and to be aware of their surroundings when outdoors. ALL PETS, indoor or out, should be vaccinated for rabies; and the public should be aware that if you feed a stray cat, it becomes your legal responsibility to care for and vaccinate it. Details at (845) 292-5910; after hours, ask for the on-call Disease Control nurse.
