Alex Prizgintas Redefines Opera Experience with Technology

Posted on April 27, 2026April 27, 2026 by Tim Bruno

Cellist and historian Alex Prizgintas is bringing a genre-blending program to Sullivan County that aims to expand what audiences expect from opera — and from the cello itself.

“A Night at the Opera,” presented by the Mamakating Historical Society, will feature a mix of classical opera staples alongside selections from Broadway and rock opera. The performance is scheduled for May 2 in Summitville.

Prizgintas, a classically trained musician, said the program draws on foundational works from the opera repertoire while pushing into less traditional territory. The show opens with the “Queen of the Night” aria from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Magic Flute, followed by well-known Italian pieces including “Nessun Dorma,” “Una Furtiva Lagrima” and “La Donna è Mobile.”

But the program doesn’t stay rooted in classical tradition. Prizgintas incorporates music from The Who’s rock opera Tommy and concludes with “Mack the Knife,” a jazz-influenced standard associated with The Threepenny Opera.

“The idea of blending really takes it to a new level,” Prizgintas said, describing the program as an effort to broaden the definition of opera and make it more accessible.

That accessibility is central to his approach. Prizgintas said he designs performances to appeal to both longtime opera enthusiasts and newcomers, emphasizing an inclusive experience for audiences of all ages.

Part of that effort comes through his use of technology. While grounded in classical technique, Prizgintas incorporates effects pedals — including delay and overdrive — to expand the sonic range of the cello. The delay effect, he said, helps create a more resonant, layered sound, particularly when mimicking vocal lines typical of opera.

“It allows the instrument to adapt to a broad range of settings,” he said.

Beyond the music, Prizgintas integrates narration and historical context into his shows, drawing on his background as a historian. He said the storytelling component helps break down barriers between performer and audience, creating a more immersive and conversational atmosphere.

“We like to call these events shows,” he said. “It allows for a more intimate connection.”

That dual identity — musician and historian — often brings together two distinct audiences. Some attendees are familiar with his lectures on regional history, while others know him primarily as a performer. In some cases, the two intersect directly. During the program’s Tommy segment, for example, Prizgintas discusses Woodstock, noting the band’s connection to Sullivan County.

The concert is part of a busy schedule. Prizgintas said he has more than 200 events booked in 2026, including upcoming lectures such as his program on Borscht Belt history in Monticello later in May.
