Monticello, NY — Drivers across New York will need to plan ahead next month as all state DMV offices temporarily close for a major technology upgrade. Sullivan County’s DMV office will be among those affected, closing from Friday, February 13, through Wednesday, February 18.
The statewide shutdown comes as the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles begins the first phase of a multi-year project to modernize its aging computer systems. The update will migrate roughly 30 million records to a new, more secure platform designed to improve efficiency and customer service.
“Due to this, our DMV office will not be open from Friday, February 13, through Wednesday, February 18,” said County Clerk Russell Reeves. “We plan to reopen Thursday, February 19, provided we receive the go-ahead from State DMV leadership.”
During the closure, no DMV services—including license renewals, registration, or online transactions—will be available. The State DMV phone lines will also be inactive. Reeves noted that while the County Clerk’s Office will remain open, staff will be limited to answering questions rather than processing DMV transactions.
Residents should also note that all Sullivan County Government Center offices, including the DMV, will be closed on Thursday, February 12, for Lincoln’s Birthday and Monday, February 16, for President’s Day.
About the Upgrade
The State DMV has partnered with FAST Enterprises, LLC, a software company that has implemented similar systems in more than 20 states. The project will unfold over two major stages during the next two years, replacing some legacy systems that are more than 50 years old. Officials say the new technology will make the DMV more secure, stable, and responsive, while providing customers with faster, more convenient services.
Mobile Unit Schedule
Residents who rely on mobile DMV services are encouraged to check the State DMV website for updated schedules and locations during the upgrade period.
