LIBERTY, N.Y. — The Sullivan County Child Care Council, Inc. is calling for more residents to become child care providers, citing a critical shortage of infant and toddler care across Sullivan County.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Sullivan County’s population was estimated at 79,920 as of July 1, 2023. Census data show that 6.1% of the county’s population is under the age of 5 — roughly 4,795 children.
By comparison, there are currently 1,129 infant and toddler child care spots available countywide, leaving many families on waiting lists, the council said.
The organization reported that of 44 recent child care inquiries received through its referral services, 31 were for infant and toddler care. Demand has been especially high in Fallsburg, Liberty and Monticello, where most providers have no infant or toddler openings.
“The bottom line is Sullivan County children and current providers need assistance,” the council said in a statement, noting that child care programs are filled and waiting lists continue to grow.
The council is encouraging residents who have considered working with young children to explore opening home-based child care programs. Officials say operating a small child care business from home can help meet community demand while supporting working families.
To address concerns about startup costs, the council said assistance may be available for supplies through its Infant/Toddler program. Most training courses offered through the agency are free for Sullivan County providers.
The organization also offers step-by-step guidance on the application process, business planning and available resources once a program is established.
