Cochecton To Celebrate America’s 250th With Five-Event History Series

Posted on June 4, 2026 by Patricio Robayo

The Town of Cochecton will celebrate America’s 250th birthday with a summer series of five free historical events highlighting the town’s hamlets and local history.

The celebration, promoted under the theme “Five events. One community. 250 years of history,” will include programs in Skinners Falls, Cochecton Center, Fosterdale, Lake Huntington and Cochecton. All events are free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served after each program.

Cochecton Town Historian Kristina Snedeker said the town is looking forward to bringing residents together through history.

“We’re really excited,” Snedeker said. “We have a bunch of things planned, and we’re ready to have a good time and maybe learn some history and just enjoy.”

Snedeker said the programs are also meant to help preserve the town’s local stories.

“I’d also like to thank my town supervisor, the town clerk and our fellow town board members who encourage the programs happening and keeping our rich history alive here in the Town of Cochecton,” she said.

The first event will focus on the Skinners Falls hamlet and will be held Sunday, June 7, 2026, at 1 p.m. at the Cochecton Depot, 8537 NY-97, Cochecton. The program will explore the history of Skinners Falls and its connection to the Delaware River.

The second event will highlight the Cochecton Center hamlet on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at 1 p.m. at Hinely’s Baseball Field on Old County Road in Cochecton Center.

The third event will focus on the former hamlet of Fosterdale on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at 1 p.m. at the Cochecton Town Hall community room, 74 Smales Road, Lake Huntington.

The fourth program, centered on Lake Huntington history, will be held Sunday, Aug. 9, 2026, at 1 p.m. at the Cochecton Town Hall community room. That event will include the opening of the town’s 1976 Bicentennial time capsule.

“We are really excited to see what we will find inside,” Snedeker said, calling it an event residents will not want to miss.

The final event will celebrate the hamlet of Cochecton on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026, at 1 p.m. at the Cochecton Men’s Club on Community Hall Road. The program will focus on the hamlet’s history and its ties to the Delaware River. According to the flyer, “Uncle Bob’s Special” may also make an appearance.

Snedeker said organizers are encouraging residents to bring photographs, memories or other pieces of local history to share during the programs.

“At each event we’re encouraging people to bring some pictures or things if they want to share some history,” she said.

Attendees can also take part in the Cochecton Passport program by collecting a stamp at each event. Those who attend all five events and submit their passport will be eligible for a collectible gift. Local businesses have also donated raffle prizes, and the more events a person attends, the more chances they will have to enter.

“We hope all our community members come out and support us, have a good time, learn some history, maybe bring some pictures to share,” Snedeker said. “We wish everyone a fun and safe summer as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday.”
