Governor Kathy Hochul said state officials are closely monitoring the electrical grid as energy demand rises during the extreme heat wave.
“New York State is in the midst of a prolonged heat wave, and we’ve been carefully monitoring our electrical grid to ensure it is able to withstand the increase in energy usage and keep New Yorkers safe,” Hochul said.
She said her administration is coordinating with Con Edison, NYISO and New York City leaders to reduce strain on the system, including efforts for large energy users to switch to alternate fuel sources where possible.
Due to increased demand and “unexpected load challenges,” Hochul urged residents to voluntarily conserve electricity, including setting air conditioners between 75 and 78 degrees and limiting unnecessary appliance use.
“These small steps can go a long way,” she said.
Hochul also emphasized public safety during the heat, urging residents to stay hydrated, reduce outdoor activity, and use cooling centers, especially seniors and people with health concerns.
“I thank New Yorkers for taking these steps to reduce their usage and helping us keep the power on and protect the most vulnerable in our community,” she said.
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for parts of New York and Pennsylvania through Friday evening. Heat index values are expected to climb into the triple digits in many locations, while overnight temperatures will remain unusually warm, offering little relief.
The heat arrives as millions of Americans prepare for Fourth of July celebrations, including parades, cookouts, fireworks and festivals.
Accuweather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham advised limiting strenuous outdoor activity between about noon and 6 or 7 p.m., when temperatures and humidity will be at their highest.
He also warned that the weather threat will expand beyond the heat as the weekend progresses.
Scattered thunderstorms are expected Friday through Sunday as the heat dome begins to weaken. Some storms could produce damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall and localized flooding.
People attending outdoor events or spending time camping or hiking should have a reliable way to receive weather warnings, especially in areas with limited cell phone service, Buckingham said.
While temperatures are expected to ease somewhat beginning Saturday, Buckingham said humidity will remain high through the holiday weekend and into early next week.
High temperatures are forecast to fall into the mid-80s by Sunday and Monday, but daily chances for showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue.
Looking farther into July, Buckingham said the overall weather pattern favors continued humid conditions with periodic rounds of showers and thunderstorms through at least the middle of the month.
