A Liberty High School teacher was arrested on Monday evening, May 5, on charges of distributing child pornography through social media, according to officials.
The Liberty Central School District confirmed that it was informed of the arrest the same evening. The district had previously learned of the investigation on April 22 and had placed the teacher on paid administrative leave immediately upon notification.
“There is no indication at this time that any Liberty Central School District student was involved,” the district stated in a release. Counseling services have been made available to students who may be affected by the news.
District Superintendent Dr. Patrick Sullivan says that student safety remains paramount. “We encourage our students to report any concerns to a trusted adult or through our Anonymous Alerts system,” Sullivan said.
The district is cooperating fully with New York State Police, who are handling the investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with relevant information to contact the State Police barracks in Liberty at 845-344-5300.
As of press time, the teacher’s name had not been publicly released, and no further details on the investigation were available.
