The most closely watched race in Sullivan County this election season is the Republican primary for County Sheriff. The contest pits longtime incumbent Michael Schiff against challenger Timothy Dymond, a retired senior investigator with the New York State Police. With no Democratic challenger currently in the race, the primary winner is likely to secure the position come January.
Ballots will be cast starting Friday, June 14, with early voting available through Sunday, June 22, at the Sullivan County Government Center and the Public Health building in Liberty. Primary Day is Tuesday, June 24, with polls open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. countywide.
In our “Meet the Candidates” radio series, we spoke with both Schiff and Dymond about their backgrounds, experience, and vision for the Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Schiff highlighted his two decades in office, during which he led initiatives to modernize the department, launched an emergency response team, and oversaw the construction of the new jail in Monticello. He also served 28 years in the New York State Police.
Dymond, a Tri-Valley High School graduate, served with the State Police beginning in 2005, including time as a Bureau of Criminal Investigations investigator and later as president of the State Police Investigators Association. He retired from law enforcement in 2020.
