Two members of the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office are being recognized statewide for actions authorities say saved lives and stopped violence in separate incidents last year.
At a recent ceremony in Albany, the New York State Sheriffs’ Association honored Lt. Cheryl Crumley and Deputy Sheriff Andrew Foertsch for their work in 2025.
Crumley received the Sheriff Colleen O’Neill Award for her response on Oct. 3, 2025, when she encountered a distraught woman on a highway overpass above Route 17 in Monticello. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Crumley was able to intervene and prevent the woman from jumping into traffic below.
The association also cited Crumley’s broader career and leadership within the department.
Deputy Foertsch was named Deputy of the Year for his actions on April 10, 2025, during an armed confrontation in Monticello. Authorities say Foertsch exchanged gunfire with a suspect and was not injured. He wounded the man, stopping what officials described as aggressive actions.
The suspect, Markell Jarrette, was convicted last week of attempted murder of a police officer. He is scheduled to be sentenced in April and faces 62 years to life in prison.
Both deputies were nominated for the awards by Sullivan County Sheriff Mike Schiff.
