Sullivan County Man Lived as Fugitive for 36 Years, Feds Say

Posted on March 20, 2026March 20, 2026 by Tim Bruno

COCHECTON, NY — A 68-year-old man living in Sullivan County was taken into custody Wednesday by federal marshals on child sex charges that have been pending in Florida for more than three decades, authorities announced.

Joseph Michaels was arrested by members of the U.S. Marshals Service Regional Fugitive Task Force in Cochecton in western Sullivan County. He is wanted by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office in Florida on charges of lewd and lascivious molestation of a child under 12, sexual battery and unlawful sexual activity with a child — charges dating to 1989.

Michaels had been living in Sullivan County after fleeing Florida, investigators determined. According to a release from the U.S. Marshals Service, over the course of 36 years, he used several aliases in an effort to avoid detection. When agents made initial contact with him Wednesday, he attempted to identify himself using an alias before ultimately admitting his true identity.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service in February 2026. Investigators then conducted surveillance operations in Cochecton before confirming Michaels’ presence there and taking him into custody.

The New York City Police Department and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office assisted by developing information that contributed to the arrest.

“While this arrest comes decades after the alleged crimes occurred, it represents an important step toward justice,” said Ricky Patel, acting U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of New York. “Cases involving crimes against children are never forgotten, and our agencies remain committed to pursuing those responsible no matter how much time has passed.”

Jhovanny Gomez, commander of the U.S. Marshals New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, echoed that sentiment.

“Even after more than three decades, this arrest demonstrates that time does not erase the seriousness of crimes committed against children,” Gomez said. “Today’s arrest shows that we will continue to pursue those accused of harming the most vulnerable members of our communities.”

Michaels is awaiting extradition to Florida and has not yet been convicted of the Florida charges.

Yes now he is caught but lived 36 years free as a bird. Hard to believe it took this long to find him. Unacceptable. How many other children did he rape during his 36 years free??

They do this to make it look like they brought him to justice. Meanwhile now he goes to a sex offender jail, which in every state I’ve been in are the sweetest jails with the most privileges and the best medical. So now he gets to live his “golden years” for free with free medical. You’re also not allowed to say boo to them anymore in prison. There are exceptions but for the most part the have it the easiest
