Fourth of July weekend is a time for fireworks, boating, backyard barbecues and summer celebrations. But local officials say the holiday can also bring serious safety risks if people are not careful.
Radio Catskill’s Rebekah Hendricks spoke with John Hauschild, Director of Safety and Fire Coordinator for Sullivan County, about how residents and visitors can enjoy the Independence Day weekend safely.
Hauschild says fireworks, grills, campfires and boating can all become dangerous when basic safety steps are ignored. He urges people to follow local laws, keep a safe distance from fireworks, never leave grills unattended and avoid mixing alcohol with activities like boating or handling fireworks.
With many people expected to gather outdoors for the holiday, officials are reminding the public to plan ahead, stay aware of their surroundings and take simple precautions to help prevent injuries and emergencies.
The goal, Hauschild says, is for everyone to enjoy a safe and happy Fourth of July weekend.
