The Sullivan County Legislature is calling on local residents to take part in an important civic process: the Charter Review Commission. Every ten years, this commission is convened to examine the County Charter—the foundational document that outlines the structure and functions of county government.
Legislators are looking for diverse community members, including those who have never served on a county advisory committee before, to contribute to the review process.
Radio Catskill’s Patricio Robayo spoke to Nadia Rajsz Chair of the Sullivan County Legislature to learn more about the Charter Review Commission—what it is, what the role of its members entails, and why it’s an important opportunity for community involvement.

The Charter requires that Commission members be “qualified county electors”: 18 years of age or older and eligible to vote in local elections. It also stipulates that members should represent various segments of the community, so legislators urge a wide variety of residents to submit a letter of interest, including any past work or life experiences they deem relevant for consideration, to Clerk of the Legislature AnnMarie Martin at annmarie.martin@sullivanny.gov (or mail or drop off the letter in person at the Office of the Legislature, Sullivan County Government Center, 100 North Street, Monticello, NY 12701). All letters must be received by March 28, 2025.
Legislators will appoint members of the Charter Review Commission in May, with a goal of convening the first meeting in June. Meetings will be open to the public. Members will choose the frequency of their meetings, who their chair/vice chair will be, and what officials, experts and other speakers will be invited to provide information. At the conclusion of their deliberations, they will provide a written report to the Legislature, including recommendations to revise the Charter, if deemed necessary.
