MONTICELLO, N.Y. — Sullivan County will hold a free residential Household Hazardous Waste Collection event on Sunday, June 14, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Monticello Transfer Station.
The event, announced by Public Works Committee Chair Joe Perrello, is open to Sullivan County residents only. Participants must provide photo identification or other proof of residency. No pre-registration is required.
“This is a great time to clean out your household chemicals,” Perrello said. “These items can be dangerous to people and the environment if stored a long time or just thrown out with the rest of the trash.”
Officials said the collection is intended for residentially generated hazardous materials, including herbicides, pesticides, mercury-containing items, cleaning products, pool chemicals, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, fluorescent bulbs, paints, solvents, acids and bases, automotive batteries, antifreeze and preservatives.
Items not accepted include tires, refrigerators, electronics, ammunition, radioactive material and medical waste.
A second collection event is scheduled for Sept. 20 at the same time and location.
