Trout Unlimited is bringing people back to freshwater in the Catskills. Jesse Vadala is the engagement manager of the New York and Connecticut region. He is also a singer/songwriter that equates the art of fishing to the art of writing a good song.
“ So I’m not the only one saying this is how songwriting and ing is the same, but I think about It all the time and yes, it’s very similar,” said Vadala. That’s what happens in a studio environment that adds an extra degree of pressure that isn’t necessarily there. When you’re in a practice space, jamming with musicians and everything is natural. You’re in a conversation. You’re just hanging out, talking, playing with your instruments, very comfortable.”
Both tasks employ your “right brain”. Your right hemisphere processes information randomly and as a whole. Whereas your left hemisphere processes logically and in sequence. When it comes to learning about fishing or song writing, Vadala got into it by just messing around.
“ I had that sense of freedom, on that. I really felt like a world was unlocked to me. I could explore and play. That’s one of the things that I think as adults, as we get older, we maybe lose sight of some of the things that help us play and feel like ourselves,” said Vadala while referring to his origins in conservation work and fly fishing.
Nowadays Vadala is grown up but still taps into that inner child when out on the Catskills’ rivers, creeks, lakes and streams. He wants you to do the same!
Trout Unlimited has 27 chapters in New York alone. Five chapters are spread throughout the Catskill region that are committed to preserving watersheds and fisheries across the state. Their slogan is “Every river needs a champion.” Will you answer the call?
