Two people were airlifted to Albany Medical Center following a three-vehicle crash on State Route 28 in the Town of Shandaken on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
The New York State Police said the crash occurred at approximately 1:39 p.m. when a 2018 Freightliner operated by 41-year-old Oscar A. Madrid of Somerset, N.J., struck a 2020 Mazda. The impact caused the Mazda to cross into the westbound lane, colliding with a 2025 Subaru.
The Subaru’s driver, a 37-year-old man, and his 36-year-old passenger, both from Wappingers Falls, sustained minor injuries and were taken to Kingston Health Alliance Hospital.
The Mazda’s 28-year-old driver and 35-year-old passenger, both from Newburgh, suffered serious injuries. Both were airlifted to Albany Medical Center. The passenger remains in critical but stable condition, while the driver is listed as stable.
Madrid and his passenger, a 33-year-old man from Fords, N.J., were unharmed.
Following the crash investigation, Madrid was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment in the second degree, reckless driving, and multiple traffic violations. He was processed at the State Police Kingston barracks and released on an appearance ticket. He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Shandaken Court on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
