In Monticello, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Dr. Rahul Gupta, the Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, made a significant announcement on Thursday, July 6, 2023. They declared that Sullivan County, known for having the highest overdose death rate in New York State, has now a designation as a High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA).

This decision grants Sullivan County access to crucial federal resources that are necessary for combating drug traffickers, as stated by Schumer.

In addition to Senator Schumer and Dr. Gupta, the event witnessed the presence of NYNJ HIDTA Director Chauncey Parker, Acting Sullivan County District Attorney Brian Conaty, Sullivan County Sheriff Michael Schiff, members of the Drug Task Force, local law enforcement officials, and members of the community.
