Ulster County Climate Corps Opens Applications for Summer Internships

Posted on February 3, 2025 by Tim Bruno

The Ulster County Climate Corps announced today that applications are open for its third year, offering paid summer internships to individuals aged 16 and older. The program, running from June 9 to August 15, pays $18 per hour and provides hands-on experience working on climate-related projects in County government.

The Climate Corps, a project-based initiative, offers a unique opportunity for students, community members, and recent graduates to gain practical experience in government while contributing to tangible climate solutions. This year, interns can choose from over a dozen projects across various departments, including Economic Development, Emergency Services, Environment, and Planning/Tourism, all focused on advancing the County’s Climate Action Commitment.

“This is a great opportunity for young people to make a difference in their community and help build a more sustainable future while gaining hands-on experience in government,” stated Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger.

Applications open today, February 3, and will be reviewed continuously through March or until the program is full. This year’s projects include sustainable farming practices, hazard mitigation planning, climate-smart communities, energy mapping, and youth climate education, among others. The program emphasizes a blend of hands-on work, professional development opportunities, and community engagement.

Naseem Haidaoui, a Climate Corps alumnus and recent SUNY New Paltz graduate, shared his experience, stating, “I helped develop the County’s climate justice outreach plan and learned from professionals in and outside of government.” Haidaoui will now serve as Confidential Secretary to the County Executive.
