The Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has received the Greater Honesdale Partnership’s 2026 Outstanding Community Achievement Award.
The honor was presented during the partnership’s annual meeting April 23 at the Central House Family Resort in Beach Lake. Auxiliary President Karen Hermey accepted the award on behalf of the organization.
In remarks at the event, Hermey credited the group’s members for their commitment to supporting local health care, saying they serve “not because they have to but because they care about healthcare in our community.”
The auxiliary also received certificates of recognition and proclamations from the Wayne County Commissioners, state Rep. Jonathan Fritz, state Sen. Rosemary Brown and U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan.
The organization was formed before the first Wayne Memorial Hospital was built in 1920. Since then, members have donated funds to help purchase medical equipment and support health care needs across the region. The auxiliary also supports Wayne Woodlands Manor, the hospital’s skilled nursing affiliate in Waymart, with facility upgrades and enhancements.
With about 150 members, the auxiliary raises money through a variety of efforts, including its secondhand stores, The Other Shops One and Two in Honesdale and Hawley, and the Gift Box at the hospital. Fundraising events include Purse Bingo, tribute concerts and other activities.
